Zoanthids

Zoanthids are small, colorful corals perfect for creating stunning displays in your reef tank. Explore our wide range of patterns and colors.

Zoanthids — "zoas" — are colony polyps that spread across a rock in a mat of colour, and they are the best entry point into reef keeping there is. They tolerate the parameter swings that would bleach a stony coral, they colour up under a wide range of lighting, and they grow fast enough that a three-polyp frag becomes a visible colony inside a year. Zoanthids are also the deepest part of our inventory by a wide margin.

Keeping Zoanthids

Zoanthids do well under moderate light — roughly 50 to 150 PAR — with low to medium indirect flow. They are photosynthetic and will survive without feeding, but a broadcast feed of small particulate food once or twice a week noticeably improves growth and colour. Give a new colony a week low in the tank before moving it up.

One safety note we would rather over-communicate: zoanthids and the closely related palythoa can carry palytoxin. Never boil or scrape rock carrying them, wear gloves when fragging, and keep them away from open cuts. Handled sensibly they are completely safe — but treat them with respect.
