Softies (Soft Corals)

Soft corals are perfect for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike. Their ease of care and graceful movement make them a must-have for any reef tank.

Soft corals have no hard skeleton — leathers, mushrooms, xenia, kenya trees, green star polyps. They sway with the flow in a way stony corals never do, and they are the most forgiving livestock in the hobby. If you are stocking a first reef tank, or you want movement in a low-maintenance system, start here.

Keeping Softies (Soft Corals)

Softies handle low to moderate light and a wide range of flow, and they are far less sensitive to alkalinity and calcium than stony corals because they are not building skeleton. Most are entirely photosynthetic and need no feeding at all.

Be deliberate about placement. Several soft corals — green star polyps and xenia in particular — spread aggressively and will carpet a rock and then the rest of the tank. Many keepers give them their own island of rock with a sand gap around it.
