SPS (Small Polyp Stony Corals)

Discover the beauty of Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals, prized for their intricate shapes and vibrant colors. Ideal for experienced reef hobbyists.

Small polyp stony corals — acropora, montipora, stylophora, seriatopora — are the branching, plating, encrusting corals that build actual reefs. They reward a stable tank with growth you can measure month over month, and they punish an unstable one quickly. This is the advanced end of the hobby and we will tell you honestly if we think your system is not ready.

Keeping SPS (Small Polyp Stony Corals)

SPS want high light and strong, turbulent flow. What matters far more than hitting a particular number is holding steady: alkalinity swinging by more than about 0.5 dKH in a day is the most common cause of tissue loss. Test consistently, dose consistently, and change things slowly.

If you are moving into SPS for the first time, start with montipora. They are considerably more forgiving than acropora, colour up beautifully, and will tell you whether your system is stable enough before you spend real money.
