LPS (Large Polyp Stony Corals)

Large polyp stony corals build a hard skeleton but carry big, fleshy, mobile polyps over the top of it — hammers, torches, frogspawn, favias, acans, chalices and blastomussa. They are the natural next step once your parameters have held steady for a few months, and they give a reef its movement: torch tentacles drifting in the flow are what most people picture when they picture a reef tank.

Keeping LPS (Large Polyp Stony Corals)

Most LPS want moderate light and gentle, indirect flow — strong direct flow keeps the polyps from extending properly. Stable alkalinity matters more than any single number here, because they are laying down skeleton continuously. Many LPS take direct feeding well; a small piece of meaty food a couple of times a week pays off in growth.

Give LPS room. A torch or hammer will extend sweeper tentacles several inches at night and will sting anything within reach, so leave real space between colonies when you place them.
